1978: Memories from Marilyn Simmons Roakes

It was 1978; Pope John Paul II was selected by the College of Cardinals to succeed Pope John Paul I , who died unexpectedly after only 33 days in office. Space Invaders was all the rage. Grease, SaturdayNight Fever, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind reigned at the box office.   We appreciate Marilyn sending us her fondest Trident Academy memories so that we could include them in this blog.

Memories from Marilyn Simmons Roakes

“My fondest memories are playing basketball, cheerleading, being on the annual staff and, most of all, I enjoyed, oh yes, going to classes with Mr. Jeter and working one-on-one in the trailers.  Mr. Gettys was an awesome teacher.  I never got ‘into’ school until I went to Trident.”

Blast from the Past — Do you remember the words to Trident Academy’s Alma Mater?

Where the Wando meets the harbor;
Where the Seahawks soar; here our Alma Mater reigns; Now and forever more.

Oh, dear Trident to you we sing – Knowledge, truth, and might; and throughout the years ahead, you will be our guiding light.
