THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS:

Welcome to Trident Academy!

The Who, What, Where, When & Why

Trident Academy is located on five beautiful acres in the middle of a private neighborhood in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. The school was founded in 1972 by a group of local physicians, college professors and parents to meet the needs of children with language based learning differences and our specialty is to remediate children who have difficulty in decoding, spelling, writing skills and processing language at a normal rate. The school’s population includes children who have dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, central auditory processing disorder, ADD and ADHD. What makes us unique

We employ the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach in our academics with each of the appropriately 100 children enrolled in the K5 through 12th grades. This approach is very prescriptive and tailored to their individual learning styles of each child.

Our demographics

Students at the school have average to above average intelligence. Our objective is to help each student to understand his or her own learning style and be confident in their abilities as they enter into their classroom challenges, college and the world at large. Trident Academy is not able to meet the needs of students who are below average intelligence or have emotional/behavioral needs.

Trident Academy students come to the school from the greater Charleston area including downtown, Mt. Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island. We also have students from across the United States and from several countries. The Trident Academy curriculum is college preparatory. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Southern Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA), and the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). The school is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Palmetto Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA).

Our admissions goal

Our goal in the admissions office is to help prospective families feel welcome and comfortable when considering Trident Academy for their child. Many families turn to our school after their child has spent months struggling academically in a traditional school setting. Our approach with every applicant is very individualized, thorough and most of all, personal.

Boarding students

Limited boarding is available for students in 7th through  12th grade. 6th grade students are reviewed for boarding on a case by case basis. Boarding opportunities are in private homes with Trident Academy approved participants. For more information on boarding fees, please contact the admissions office.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

An excellent education for a child with learning differences may require an investment that means some financial sacrifices by families considering enrollment in Trident Academy. Even with planned sacrifices, financial assistance may be needed to make tuition payments. We have added additional financial aid for the 2010-11 academic year. And, like many schools across the country, Trident Academy uses the National Association of Independent Schools to assess a family’s level of need. Families whose child has been accepted into Trident Academy may request an application for financial aid from our school’s admissions office and apply for financial assistance by submitting a NAIS application along with their 1040 IRS Tax Return. Financial assistance is awarded based on need in a first come, first served basis.
