Trident Academy recently was selected to receive a $4,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank®, to help provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy Training for low- to moderate-income parents of children with autism in the Lowcountry. Parents and family members who receive the training will learn how to effectively work with children with autism and, thereby, lessen familial tensions and frustrations from feelings of helplessness and improve family relationships.
ABA therapy is recognized as the most effective method in working with children with autism. The instruction includes an emphasis on functional communication; executive functioning; social skills training; school-readiness skills for transition; expressive, receptive and nonverbal language; independent living skills; behavior modification; academics; and joint attention. Courtney Thames, Applied Behavior Analysis Director at Trident Academy, hopes to attract more than 100 participants in the first year. All participants in Trident Academy’s training program will have the opportunity for practicum experience/volunteer work to practice their skills in our educational setting. Parents will learn how to write behavior and educational plans, implement behavior support strategies, use various assistive technology tools and apps, build and use de-escalation procedures. After training, participants will have access to our website for short refresher webinars.
“With the help of the TD Charitable Foundation grant, Trident Academy will be able to better reach those who are in need of support and education in best practices for working with autism spectrum disorders,” Ms. Thames said. “We will now be able to provide the best training possible so that participants will leave feeling supported and confident in applied behavior analysis practices. Trident Academy extends its deepest gratitude to TD Charitable Foundation for this much needed support for our pilot program.”
Trident Academy’s program currently is the only comprehensive training program (free or fee-based) in the area that offers continuity of professional development. To learn more about this program, contact Ms. Thames at firstname.lastname@example.org
