Certified Level Training Course – Summer 2017

Certified level coursework at Trident Academy is divided into two thirty-hour courses, Parts 1 and 2. The two 30-hour courses follow the curriculum guidelines of the AOGPE, but are independent from each other and may be taken in any order.

Part 1:  4 Day Course
June 2018 TBD
30 hours of instruction

Topics to include the following:

  • Beyond the Basics:  A review of the Orton-Gillingham approach
  • Current understanding of Dyslexia and the brain
  • Teaching older and more advanced students:
    • Advanced word attack strategies
    • Morphology, teaching roots and affixes
    • Reading fluency
  • Formal and informal assessments
  • Test interpretation and implications for teaching
  • Knowledge of other programs based on Orton-Gillingham principles

Part 2:  4 Day Course
June 5-8, 2017
30 hours of instruction

Topics to include the following:

  • A review of phonemic awareness, phonology and phonics
  • Tests and testing continued, the student profile, working memory, executive function and comprehension
  • Teaching vocabulary, grammar and comprehension
  • Writing and the writing process
  • The Academy, the application process and the Academy Code of Ethics

*Note: The course does not include practicum but opportunity for practicum may be available for qualified candidates. In addition to the 60 hours of contact time from these two courses Academy guidelines allow for up to 25 hours of approved conferences and workshops, and up to 25 hours of web based instruction directly assigned by the Fellow to complete the 100 hour requirement.

Course Instructor: Sheila Costello, Accredited Training Fellow, AOGPE.
Sheila currently trains in the Charleston and Savannah areas at the Associate and Certified levels. She is the former Director of Language Enrichment and Development and Training Fellow at Trident Academy. Sheila has a M.S. in Clinical Chemistry from Northeastern University but as a parent of a dyslexic child changed careers and trained in OG at The Carroll School in Lincoln MA. She worked as a tutor at Carroll before becoming head of the Garside Institute for Teacher Training. She taught Certified level courses at The Carroll School before relocating to Charleston. She has trained Trident Faculty to the Certified level since 2011.

Laura Bryant, Certified/AOGPE, Fellow in Training.  Laura is currently the Director of Language Enrichment and Development at Trident Academy. She has her B.A. in Special Education from Ohio University and her M.A. in Early Childhood Special Education. Laura has spent her teaching career working with students from kindergarten to high school, public to private school with all types of learning disabilities. In 2008, Laura first learned of Orton-Gillingham instruction when her son was referred for tutoring. Three years later she was completing her Associates practicum, tutoring, and co-teaching a fifth grade class at Trident Academy. Laura continued teaching for several more years before becoming the Director of Academics. She is currently a Fellow in Training and assists with teaching Associate and Certified Level courses in Savannah and Trident Academy.
