Orton-Gillingham

Orton Fellow Conducts Trident OG Workshop
Trident Academy is one of eight schools in the United States that is accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (OG).

Trident Academy faculty are trained in the OG phonics-based method of instruction. The intensive training sessions are held annually on the Trident Academy campus and are conducted by Orton-Gillingham Fellows, the highest level of certified trained OG professionals.

The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators is a non-profit educational organization incorporated in 1995 in the State of New York by action of the Board of Regents of The University of the State of New York, for and on behalf of the State Education Department. Planning for the Academy began in 1991 as a response to discussions initiated by the Orton Dyslexia Society (International Dyslexia Association).

From the Academy's web site: "Those engaged in the planning and the implementation of the Academy were a group of dedicated and experienced Orton-Gillingham teachers and educators from throughout the United States concerned with how better to serve persons with dyslexia, fellow professionals, and the public interest."

The Academy's Purpose

  • to establish and maintain professional and ethical standards for practitioners and educators of the Orton-Gillingham approach for the treatment of dyslexia;
  • to examine, approve, certify, and recognize those individuals who have demonstrated competence as practitioners and educators of the Orton-Gillingham approach and to accredit programs that train such persons;
  • to insure professional growth of Orton-Gillingham practitioners and educators by promoting and sponsoring continuing education programs;
  • to sponsor, promote, and undertake research relevant to Orton-Gillingham instruction;
  • to disseminate the results of such research to professional educators, agencies, and to the public at large;
  • to promote public awareness of the needs of children and adults with dyslexia and of the Orton-Gillingham approach for the treatment of dyslexia.
