Higher Teaching Designations Earned at Trident Academy

Three Trident Academy teachers have earned higher designations from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham, an organization that accredits training and teachers in the approach used to teach students with dyslexia and other learning differences.

“I have already been able to implement the Orton-Gillingham approach in my classroom,” says Colby Doetzer, a teacher in The School for Asperger’s/HFA.

The Academy of Orton-Gillingham certifies teachers at three levels: Associate, Certified, and Fellow.

Ms. Doetzer earned the Associate level, while Suzanne Knowlton and Judy Fell earned the Certified level. Several other teachers at Trident Academy are already members of the Academy, including Janet Jones, director of Orton-Gillingham Instruction, who is a Fellow.

“I have learned much more about how the child’s brain stores information and the best strategies to help them learn information they can recall later,” explains Mrs. Fell, a LEAD teacher in The School for Language-Based Learning Differences. “I can now plan my lessons so they learn information they can use in their independent work.”

“I’ve really enjoyed making our complex language even more ‘user friendly’ by analyzing and breaking down words into components,” says Mrs. Knowlton, a LEAD teacher in the School for Lanugage-Based Learning Differences. “Even my middle schoolers have fun using Play-Doh, letter tiles, and shaving cream to build words.

To be eligible for Associate Level certification, members must have a Bachelor’s degree, 60 hours of Orton-Gillingham coursework, 100 hours of Orton-Gillingham supervised practicum experience, and ten 40-60 minute lesson observations by a Fellow. Certified Level members must do an additional 100 hours of coursework, an additional 200 hours of practicum experience, and 10 lesson observations. Fellows must have a Master’s degree, a total of 250 hours of coursework, 600 hours of practicum experience, and continuing professional development. The process is rigorous and applications are held to a high standard.

Trident Academy is one of just a few schools in the nation accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham. To learn more about Orton-Gillingham and how to earn your certification, contact Janet Jones at 843.884.7046 or jjones@tridentacademy.com.
