Math-U-See Improves Student Achievement

Date: 9/15/2011

Math test scores and student comprehension have increased since Trident Academy began using the Math-U-See curriculum during the 2010-11 school year. Middle and High School math achievement scores went up by 20% and Lower School students no longer rely on their fingers for addition and subtraction.

All math and Lower School teachers at Trident Academy are trained in the Math-U-See curriculum, designed to provide a firm foundation in mathematics using multi-sensory techniques. Each attended a 6.5-hour training to learn the methodology behind using manipulatives to present explicit, systematic, structured, and cumulative teaching techniques with progress monitoring.

“With Math-U-See, the students are more confident of their abilities in math,” says Brenda Alvanos, High School math teacher. “High School and Middle School students can work at their own pace and we make sure they experience success in a lesson before they move on to the next lesson. Teachers have the flexibility to create their own games/lessons in addition to using the hands-on activities that are provided. Both are visual so the problems make sense to the students.”

The goal of Math-U-See is to help produce confident problem solvers who enjoy the study of math. Math is applied to everyday situations so the students learn their math facts, rules, and formulas, and are able to use this knowledge in real life applications. The study of math is much more than committing a list of facts to memory. It includes memorization, but it also encompasses learning the concepts that are critical to problem solving.

Since 2004, Math-U-See has been working with Special Education Teachers to teach students who are struggling in math or have special needs. These students are showing tremendous improvements and are closing the achievement gap.
