The AOGPE Fellow Tradition at Trident Academy

Trident Academy is among an elite group of schools who always have an Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) Fellow on staff. Shelia Costello retired at the end of the 2013-14 year to become president of the Academy, knowing that Janet Jones, also an AOGPE Fellow, would step in.

“You can’t just go out and find a Fellow easily,” explains Ms. Costello, M.Ed. and AOGPE Fellow. “There are a small number of Fellows spread around the country, so it is rare for a school to have two in a row. But, it was very important to me that Trident Academy stays in the hands of a Fellow.”

Janet Jones is now the Director of Orton-Gillingham at Trident Academy. She has more than 38 years of experience in multi-sensory language instruction and has traveled the country training teachers in the Orton-Gillingham approach.

Both Ms. Costello and Ms. Jones are Accredited Training Fellows and Trident Academy is one of just six certified-level AOGPE accredited training programs in the nation. An AOGPE Fellow must be on staff to maintain this designation and to implement certified-level training programs.

“Trident Academy remains the only school in the Charleston region to provide an immersive Orton-Gillingham environment,” says Kathy Cook, Head of School. “Ms. Jones will take our Orton-Gillingham program into the future, maintaining our excellent standards while providing knowledgeable leadership for our students.”

Ms. Costello says, “I know Trident Academy is in great hands. And that is a good feeling.”
