The School for Asperger’s/HFA at Trident Academy continues to grow, adding two new teachers for the second semester.
Colby Doetzer is teaching students in Kindergarten and the first grade in the School for Asperger’s/HFA. She received her B.A. in elementary and special education from Loyola University Maryland and is certified in both areas. Ms. Doetzer has experience in a variety of school settings, which include an inclusion classroom as well as a self-contained classroom at the Kennedy Kriegar Institute in Baltimore, MD. She is currently working toward her Associate Level Certificate in the Orton-Gillingham approach and has assisted in Trident Academy classrooms since August 2013.
“I love being able to employ my creative side,” says Ms. Doetzer. “When teaching children with Asperger’s it is imperative to be creative and think outside of the box. Trident Academy is wonderful and its faculty devote themselves to addressing each student’s individual learning style.”
Erik Fossdal is teaching students in the second and third grades in the School for Asperger’s/HFA. Mr. Fossdal received his B.A. in education from the University of South Florida and earned a special education endorsement from Portland State University. He spent four years working as a special education teacher at a small school in a culturally diverse and impoverished neighborhood. He says the students and families there shaped who he is today.
“As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher,” Mr. Fossdal notes. “I believe that every child can learn and be successful. I will work hard to build strong and meaningful relationships with each student, utilizing all the things that make them so special to inspire them to learn, give them the confidence to challenge themselves, and allow them to feel successful each and every day.”
Ms. Doetzer and Mr. Fossdal are an indication of the growth the program has made since opening in August 2013. Their addition to the Trident Academy team is also in anticipation of the program’s growth this coming academic year. In August 2014, the School for Asperger’s/HFA at Trident Academy will grow to include classes for students in grades 4 and 5.
