Orton-Gillingham has been the backbone of Trident Academy’s approach to educating students with language-based learning differences for over 40 years. This summer, The Center for Learning Differences Education at Trident Academy will host two Orton-Gillingham Training Courses for educators and for parents.
Orton-Gillingham is widely held as the premier approach to educational intervention for individuals with dyslexia. Taught by an Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators Fellow, the programs will provide teachers and parents with the knowledge and strategies to address the needs of students who struggle with our written language.
Orton-Gillingham Associate Level Course
July 14-24, 2014
This course provides an in-depth foundation in language concepts for anyone who teaches reading and written language skills at any grade level. It is essential knowledge for those teaching students who struggle with dyslexia or reading and written language disorders. Individuals taking this course will participate in an in-depth study of the structure of our written language, the characteristics of struggling readers, and the principles underlying the Orton-Gillingham method. Participants will practice developing lessons and delivering systematic, multi-sensory instruction. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 – 4:30.
Orton-Gillingham for Classroom Teachers and Parents
July 28-31, 2014
This course is an introduction to the Orton-Gillingham approach. Participants will learn about structure of our written language including letter-sound associations, syllable types, syllable division patterns, and spelling rules. New to Trident Academy, this four-day course will meet Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 – 4:30.
“Taking the Orton-Gillingham training course at Trident Academy helped me to connect the missing pieces for my students,” shares Susan Nyman, LEAD Instructor at Trident Academy. “All of the activities I learned can be used with groups of varying sizes with minimal adaptation.”
Trident Academy is one of 17 Academy Accredited Training Programs in the United States, and one of only six whose training is accredited at the Certified level.
