October is Learning Differences Awareness Month

We're proud to announce that October 25 has been proclaimed as Learning Differences Awareness Month in the City of Charleston, South Carolina, by Mayor William S. Cogswell, Jr.

The text of the proclamation reads,

WHEREAS, for decades, the month of October has been recognized across the United States as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the challenges and strengths of individuals with learning differences; and

WHEREAS, as many as eight percent of children in South Carolina schools -- approximately one in twelve students -- are diagnosed with a specific learning disability, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and/or executive function difficulties, which can significantly affect a child's ability to read, write, and understand mathematical concepts; and

WHEREAS, since 1972, Trident Academy has proudly served as a vital resource for families throughout the Lowcountry and beyond, providing a supportive learning environment for students with language-based learning differences; and

WHEREAS, Trident Academy's specialized curriculum and individualized instruction have empowered countless students to develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed both academically and personally, with many successfully transitioning back into traditional schools across the Charleston region; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness and understanding of learning differences helps foster greater inclusion, acceptance, and appreciation of the unique strengths that every learner brings to our community; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, William S. Cogswell, Jr., Mayor of the City of Charleston, do hereby proclaim October 2025 as Learning Differences Awareness Month in the City of Charleston and encourage all citizens to join in recognizing and celebrating the achievements of indivudals with learning differences, as well as the educators and families who support them.
